Listen to Right where it belongs:
http://music.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=music.artistalbums&artistid=7788701&ap=0&albumid=15690
See the animal in it's cage that you built
Are you sure what side you're on?
Better not look him too closely in the eye
Are you sure what side of the glass you are on?
See the safety of the life you have built
Everything where it belongs
Feel the hollowness inside of your heart
And it's all
Right where it belongs
[Chorus:]
What if everything around you
Isn't quite as it seems?
What if all the world you think you know
Is an elaborate dream?
And if you look at your reflection
Is it all you wanted to be?
What if you could look right through the cracks?
Would you find yourself
Find yourself afraid to see?
What if all the world's inside of your head
Just creations of your own?
Your devils and your gods
All the living and the dead
And you really are alone
You can live in this illusion
You can choose to believe
You keep looking but you can't find the woods
While you're hiding in the trees
[Chorus:]
What if everything around you
Isn't quite as it seems?
What if all the world you used to know
Is an elaborate dream?
And if you look at your reflection
Is it all you wanted to be?
What if you could look right through the cracks
Would you find yourself
Find yourself afraid to see?

I used to listen to NIN in high school. I can't listen to some of it
ReplyDeletevery often anymore, because, particularly "Heresy" but...
I like the industrial sound, and there's a longing for something more
and expressions of disillusionment that I think are powerfully
expressed in "Down in It", "Mr. Self Destruct," "Hurt," "Happiness in
Slavery," and even "Terrible Lie" (which on the surface seems to rail
at God, but can be addressed at whatever promises fulfillment and
fails to deliver. I'm not even certain it's intended to be directed
at God). And even with its extreme profanity, "closer to god" hints
at the desire for transcendence.
There's also something powerful about the song that says "I want
to...do something that matters" even though obviously, I would be
dismayed if Trent...er...successfully accomplished some of the things
he mentions in that song.
These are all old school NIN stuff -- from Pretty Hate Machine
(1990?), Broken (1992), and The Downward Spiral (1994)
Feel free to post this message with my e-address to your blog as well.
