Annie Dillard's About Eskimos

Eskimos, toothless,
on the move, practice
cruelty to animals;

mend traces; build
ice houses, warm,
where warm air rises.

On the move, it is hard.
Many Eskimos starve.
Those who live, move.

On clear days, large mammals
on the move, leave trails
floating, of mammal breath.

Watch the trails, watch
your step. Chew, if you must,
quietly. You can catch

an Eskimo: File your teeth.
Mark his path. If you see an
igloo, hold your breath.
